Small Wind

Integrated Wind and Solar Solutions

IX Energy has partnered with leading small wind providers to offer an integrated wind and solar solution.

IX Energy has chosen Savonius turbines as our primary wind technology, however, we work with the client to customize a solution that best fits the facility. Savonius turbines in their most basic form are two or three scoops arrayed to create drag. If you looked at one from above, it would have an "S" shaped cross section.

IX Energy favors Savonius vertical shaft wind turbines because they are:

Quiet compared to the horizontal shaft, making them perfect for mixed use commercial or government areas.

The propeller type is more visible to birds and bats than traditional "fan style" turbines.

The simplicity of design, ease of installation, and lower maintenance costs.

Geothermal Case Study –
A Grounded Solution with Unbelievable Savings

Albany Molecular Research, Inc., Albany, New York

Background

Albany Molecular Research, Inc. has offices in Syracuse and Albany. The company decided to improve and expand an existing building located near Albany's Pine Bush Preserve. Albany Molecular placed considerable importance on completing this project in an environmentally friendly manner.

The original building consisted of 75,000 square feet and was constructed as office and warehouse space. Albany Molecular Research, Inc. expanded it to a 130,000-square-foot state-of-the-art pharmaceutical laboratory.

Recommendations

The analysis recommended the following equipment be installed:

Variable air-volume and supply systems with direct digital controls (DDC)

Run-around heat recovery for cooling-ventilation load reduction

Primary/secondary hot-water pumping; and

Geothermal groundwater cooling system

Results

Installation of the geo system will result in:

A cost savings of $139,745 annually

A 397,453 kWh reduction in energy use per year

A payback period of three years

Summer and winter peak electric demands will be reduced by approximately 610 kW and 85 kW respectively

Using the earth for heating and cooling.

A geothermal system uses the earth as a source of heating and cooling. The system provides interior heating and cooling, and can replace traditional HVAC system. In the winter, the fluid in the pipes extracts heat from the earth and carries it into the building. In the summer, the system reverses and takes heat from the building and deposits it to the cooler ground.

Geo Heating

During the heating cycle, a geothermal system uses the earth loop to extract heat from the ground. As the system pulls heat from the loop, it distributes it through a conventional duct system or radiant floor system as warm air.

Geo Cooling

In the cooling mode, a geothermal system cools the facility by reversing the heating process. Instead of taking heat from the ground, it is removed from the facility and moved back into the earth loop. The cool air is then distributed through the duct system in the facility.

The three major parts to every geothermal system are:

Geothermal heat pump to move heat between the building and the fluid in the loop

Earth loop heat exchanger for transferring heat between fluid and the earth

Distribution subsystem for delivering heating or cooling to the building

Geo Offers Key Benefits to Industrial Applications

Geothermal systems are renewable energy technology that offers many benefits over cooling tower based chilled-water HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning) systems that are frequently used in a wide range of commercial and industrial applications:

Reduced energy and maintenance costs

Reduced construction costs

Enhanced safety and beauty of property

Higher efficiency

Quiet comfort and satisfaction

Lasting savings

Environmentally friendly

Reliable

Some of the Advantages of Geothermal include:

Saves up to 70% on current heating bills

Often pays for itself in less time than a traditional HVAC

Involves no combustion, clean and safe to handle

Takes up much less space than traditional HVAC

Much more efficient than competing fuel technologies
–48% more efficient than the best gas furnaces on a source fuel basis
–75% more efficient than oil furnaces
–36% more efficient than gas heat pumps in heating mode and
–43% in cooling mode

Solar - Harnessing the Sun's Energy

» Read Solar Case Study

Photovoltaic (PV) systems produce electricity generated from sunlight. These systems have the flexibility to be mounted on a roof, or a parking structure,,or on the grounds of the facility. The electricity is then sent to a device called an inverter, which converts direct current electricity into alternating current electricity.

The AC electricity then travels from the inverter to the electrical service at the breaker box, where power is circulated throughout the facility. If there is excess power, it is directed to the electric meter, causing the meter to register the production and gain a renewable energy credit with the utility company.

There are two types of PV systems that are commonly used on a commercial scale: crystalline panels and thin film.

Crystalline Panels:

Crystalline panels are primarily made from silicon and blended with boron to form crystalline ingots.

Crystalline panels are extremely durable, withstanding 125 M.P.H. winds, surviving one-inch hail at terminal velocity and thermal cycling at high temperatures.

For every unit of solar energy that hits the cell, the crystalline panel can generally convert 15-18% of this energy into electricity.

Thin Film:

A thin film option is easier to install, lightweight and adaptable.

Thin film is also derived from silicon, but with the additional materials like copper indium diselenide, allows flexibility in attachment to surfaces.

They have low manufacturing costs and can be tailored into a variety of shapes.

Even though they come at a lower cost, they do, however, produce a lower efficiency output, around 12%.
